Automatic or automated optical inspection, or AOI, is a critical technology in the production and testing of electronic printed circuit boards, or PCBs. Automatic optical inspection, or AOI, allows for quick and accurate assessment of electronic assemblies, particularly PCBs, to verify that the product quality is good and that the items are manufactured correctly and without manufacturing flaws as they leave the production line. After the soldering process, automated optical inspection devices can be added to the production line. As a result, they can be implemented to detect issues early in the manufacturing process.
These systems are used to test and analyze PCBs for defects such as soldering flaws, component flaws, ball grid array (BGA), surface flaws, dimensional flaws, component placement flaws, and chip-scale packaging (CSP) flaws, among others. With the introduction of microelectronics and developments in PCBs, circuits have become more complicated, making manual inspection of the boards nearly unfeasible. As a result, AOI plays a vital role in inspecting these boards. Additionally, early in the production process, process difficulties in the solder and assembly areas can be detected, and the knowledge can be used to promptly feedback to earlier stages. As a result, a timely response helps ensure that issues are identified and corrected before too many boards are made with the same issue. It is an important aspect of the manufacturing industry's quality control segment. The automated optical inspection system now allows for real-time inspection of industrial units.
