SCOPE OF THE REPORT
Artificial Lift Market Overview
The global artificial lift market is projected to reach USD 12.41 billion by 2029 from an estimated USD 8.0 billion in 2020, at a CAGR of 5.0% during the forecast period.
The artificial lift system represents an established and mature technology utilized to augment reservoir pressure and facilitate the extraction of hydrocarbons from oil wells. Approximately 85-90% of wells necessitate artificial lift systems to supplement reservoir pressure. Diverse artificial lift methods are deployed based on well characteristics and technological accessibility, thereby fostering the expansion of the global market in the foreseeable future.
The global oil consumption market has experienced significant growth over recent decades, driven by burgeoning industrial and transportation sectors. In response to escalating demand for hydrocarbons, operators worldwide are engaged in relentless drilling endeavors to optimize production. However, many extant wells lack adequate reservoir pressure to facilitate fluid extraction to the surface, necessitating assistance for hydrocarbon retrieval.
The Electric Submersible Pump (ESP) represents a versatile technology widely embraced across different regions to augment oil production, particularly suitable for moderate to high production rates, including highly deviated, remote, and subsea deep water wells. Conversely, the sucker rod pump stands out as the predominant artificial lift variant due to its comparatively lower installation costs and extended operational lifespan.
The artificial lift system market witnesses widespread adoption as production rates decline and operational costs soar, positioning it as the most frequently utilized artificial lift mechanism globally. Concurrently, alternative methods such as the progressive cavity pump, gas lift, hydraulic lift, among others, contribute to market diversity.
The escalating global oil consumption, coupled with economic advancements in various industries including transportation, aviation, and power generation, is poised to drive demand for hydrocarbons, subsequently fueling the need for artificial lift systems in the forthcoming years, thereby bolstering market growth.
Artificial Lift Market Segment Analysis
Based on type, the artificial market is segmented into ESP, PCP (Progressing Cavity Pump), Rod Lift, Gas Lift, and Others. Electric submersible pumps (ESPs) are preferred as the best options for use in large oil wells that have reached or have passed their peak oil production phase and require additional development to increase production rates. This is more common in Middle Eastern countries, where many oilfields are mature and necessitate the use of artificial lift systems.
Rod lift, beam lift, or sucker rod lift refer to an artificial lift system that uses a surface power source to drive a downhole pump assembly. The unit is made up of several components that are used on both the surface and the subsurface. Rod lifts have a high salvage value for downhole equipment and are capable of efficiently handling gas and corrosion during the artificial lift process. As a result, the growing need to avoid gas and corrosion handling during artificial lift operations is propelling the rod lift segment.
Based on well type, the market is categorized into horizontal and vertical segments. Horizontal drilling and multistage hydraulic fracturing have liberated massive amounts of natural gas from shale reservoirs. Because the number of horizontal wells is increasing, operators are developing advanced horizontal drilling technologies and completion design strategies to address the challenges of using artificial lift.
Vertical drilling provides access to a well that cannot be drilled horizontally at its deepest point. Various artificial lift techniques are suitable for vertical well drillings which include rod/beam lift, gas lift and plunger lift.
Offshore and onshore is the classification of the artificial lift market based on application. The offshore segment is expected to grow at the fastest rate during the forecast period. Artificial lift methods such as hydraulic pumping, gas lift, ESP, and PCP are most prominently used in offshore oil wells. The companies have been exploring the offshore locations for oil & gas production owing to the fact that offshore has huge untapped reserves. Thus, the offshore market is a more capital-intensive segment as compared to onshore.
